Here’s what’s going on Shabbos-House-wise this week (November 6 thru 10th, 2018), see what can work for you!
TUES 11/6: HEBREW BIRTHDAY TABLING
Do you know your Hebrew birthday? Would you like to find out? Stop by our table in the Campus Center Lobby between 11am-2pm to find out. We’ll have goody-bags too. Remember those bags? Why are we doing a Hebrew Birthday Table on Election Day? There’s a quote attributed to the Rebbe: “Birth is G-d’s way of saying you matter!” Indeed, your vote matters, too!
TORAH-TUES 11/6: HOPE IN TREI-ASAR
7:45pm session only. This class on passages of hope and redemption (based on texts from the Minor – lesser-known – Prophets) was prepared by and will be presented by Seth Brooks. Learn something you’ve never learned before. Menu includes Lasagna, Zucchini Soup, and more.
WED 11/7: GIRLS NIGHT – PAINT ‘N DIP
Once a month, together with UAlbany Hillel, we host a Girls-Nite-In event with a craft, activity, discussion. This month, as Chanukah approaches, we’re doing a Chanukah-themed “Paint ‘n Dip” with a guided painting session (no painting expertise required) led by our very own Chani. Program begins 7:30pm (as some students want to go to the Senate meeting at 9pm that night regarding the Holidays-off issue) and there will be all types of dips, from guac to fondue.
FRIDAY NIGHT 11/9 – NEW TIME!
Now that we’ve changed the clocks, Shabbat Dinner every week (until mid-Spring) will be at 7pm. Prayer precede at 6pm. Shabbat Dinner this week is at Shabbos House. Come and bring a friend, let’s enjoy Shabbat as a Jewish campus community. As usual, there’s no dress-code, no RSVP, come and go as you need, late is fine, too.
SHABBAT DAY 11/10:
We’re having a special Bar-Mitzvah anniversary Kiddush (including foods we never did yet) before Torah reading this Sat. Prayers at 10am, Shabbat Lunch at 12:30pm. Shabbat Lunch has become a nice sized but not too big event, good times, good food, sometimes some really great discussion, too. Come for part of services and lunch or just for lunch, most come just for lunch. And we have a quick Mincha prayer afterward, and sometimes a short “Womens Wisdom” class for the girls with Raizy.
SAT NIGHT 11/10 – JAMMIN’/CAFE
We’re trying to bring it back, but do need a few more musicians. It’s informal, casual, we serve freshly made pizza and nibble nosh, we’ll make Havdalah, of course, and people hang out for a bit on Sat Night, and some student musicians play a little guitar, keyboard, ukelele, whatever. If you know a song, play a song! And of course, non-musicians, are very welcome. Camaraderie and conversation is also a form of music!
There you have it, the events of the week with Shabbos House. All the above events are at Shabbos House aside for the tabling today in Campus Center. May this be a good, happy, healthy, positive, productive and enjoyable week. Come for whatever events or activities you can, be part of it, help build campus community and your develop own personal (and Jewish) journey at the same time.
