Yom Kippur falls on a Tuesday night and Wednesday this year (2016) midweek at UAlbany. Classes are cancelled and travel time is allowed for, but many students do prefer to stay up here and pray as a campus community.
Yom-Kippur services are open and free to all students, faculty and community. Come for part or for all.
TUESDAY 10/11/2016 EVE OF YOM KIPPUR 5776
4:00-5:30pm: Pre-fast Dinner, full-course meal served at Shabbos House.
6:00pm: Kol Nidrei Services in the Campus Center Room 375 (3rd floor SE corner room)
WEDNESDAY 10/12/2016 YOM KIPPUR DAY 5776
9:30am: Traditional (Orthodox) services begin in UAlbany Campus Center Room 375, these Yom-Kippur Shacharit and Musaf services, usually run until about 2 or 2:30pm.
11am: Egalitarian/Progressive Services begin in UAlbany Campus Center Assembly Hall on the 2nd floor.
2pm-5pm: Afternoon Break.
5:00pm: Mincha Prayer in the Campus Center in Room 375 shorter prayer but with Torah reading and we read the Book of Jonah as the Haftorah.
6:00pm: Neilah Closing Prayer (same room as Mincha).
6:59pm: Fast Ends with Shofar Blast!
7:00pm: Hillel serves Break-fast (short Maariv prayer and Havdalah and break-fast at 7:15pm)
A FEW NOTES ABOUT THE SERVICES
Both evening prayers (Tues and Wed evening) will be joint, led by Rabbi Mendel in a traditional but student-friendly format.
The traditional services are led in Hebrew, but page numbers are called and short explanations and inspiration tidbits shared throughout.
There’s no charge, no dress code, no attendance taken. Come as works for you.
We have a limited number of Tallit for people to use, you can bring your own as well if that’s your family custom, but there is no requirement to wear one, of course.
And don’t forget Sukkot!!!! We love Sukkot!!!
