This is a story from the book “A Life Examined is a Life Worth Living” about a couple honeymooning in Italy.
The husband spent some of his youth in Italy where his father served in the US foreign service. So that’s where he went back to honeymoon with his wife after their wedding. One time they were in a tram-car, when his wife (who can be very eager, curious and easily excited) saw a colorful ad sign with the words “Fistuali Anali” which she thought meant “Annual Festival”. She excitedly pointed it out to her newlywed husband, loudly proclaiming that they should go there.
He blushed. Fistuali Anali actually means anal fistuals, and has nothing to do with a festival. It’s a test for a medical issue, in a private body area. But she kept persisting, the train riders were all looking at her carry on, and giggling and staring. He was getting more and more embarrassed.
Then he caught himself. He realized, why am I emotionally siding with the strangers on this tram-car against my wife? They will be gone at the next stop, and she will be with me for life! Who cares what they think of her mistake? Forget them!
